1.5 million cortical neurons... and 46.5 million synapses - simulated...

Yesterday, SpikeFun was enhanced with video capturing feature (currently to set of JPEGs only)... and I've decided to run a slightly larger than usual simulation to demonstrate the video capture in full effect... What you see in the video below is randomly wired (OK, not so randomly - there are some rules... check out the "Simulation Configuration" options in SpikeFun) artificial nervous system with 1.5 million neurons and 46.5 million synapses! This simulation requires approx. 5.5 GB of RAM making it impossible with the 32-bit build... 64-bit build of SpikeFun will be released shortly.
This represents a fairly large simulation for a single PC considering the fact that we are talking about spiking neurons with modeling of synaptic receptor kinetics, STDP and so on... video shows just the first 3 seconds of the simulation, during which time there is a strong delta wave activity arising spontaneously out of the wired neurons... beautiful, isn't it? :)
Just be sure to select 720p or 1080p for the video quality...
